This workshop provides an introduction to oedema management for those new or returning to the clinical area. It provides participants with an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of oedema as well as the underlying mechanisms of oedema development. The impact of the venous, lymphatic and arterial systems on oedema will be revised. Recommended assessments will be reviewed and demonstrated. A range of evidence-based treatment techniques will be presented and the theoretical rationale for their use will be detailed with a strong focus on compression therapy. Participants will have opportunity to develop clinical reasoning skills through the use of case studies and practical sessions.

Participants are invited to bring their own experiences and case studies (including photos) for discussion throughout the program.

The workshop will provide an understanding of how the presence of oedema can interfere with client’s occupations. Managing this condition within the context of the person, will assist occupational roles to be fulfilled.


Suitable for new graduates, early career Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists 

The course targets therapists who are either new to oedema management or who are returning to working with oedema management after an absence. It is an introductory course.

Please note; this course is not suitable for student or experienced Occupational Therapists


  • Be able to identify the signs and symptoms of oedema
  • Be able to identify the underlying causes of oedema
  • Understand the elements of oedema assessment
  • Use clinical reasoning to determine appropriate treatment techniques
  • Be able to apply simple compression bandaging for upper and lower limb oedema management
  • Be able problem solve appropriate garment prescription


Amanda Pigott
Dr Amanda Pigott is an occupational therapist with extensive experience in oedema and lymphoedema management. Amanda has worked with a wide range of conditions requiring oedema management. Amanda has obtained her PhD, has worked in the cancer-related lymphoedema service at the Princess Alexandra Hospital for 10 years and now works as a research fellow at the University of Queensland investigating the causes and effects of oedema.
