NSW Safeguards Child and Adolescent Mental Health Response teams (Safeguards Teams) commence

In the 2021 State Budget, the NSW Government invested $109.5 million over four years to establish 25 Safeguards Child and Adolescent Mental Health Response Teams (‘Safeguards Teams’) across NSW.

Safeguards Teams are a new dedicated Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) resource designed to provide care to young people aged 0-17 years who are experiencing acute mental health distress.

The Safeguards Teams are community based.  The teams will provide rapid, mobile, intensive and flexible short-term support to help during a mental health crisis. They will provide extended hours mental health services and partner with relevant health services to ensure 24/7 support to young people and families while in crisis.

The Teams will respond to young people in their schools, homes and communities and in hospital-based settings (Emergency Departments, hospital wards), through face to face, phone and telehealth appointments.

The Safeguards Teams are multidisciplinary and are comprised of discipline specific positions including Senior Occupational Therapist positions.

The inclusion of Occupational therapists within the core team recognises that Occupational Therapists are a critical part of the Child and Adolescent Mental health Service workforce and hold an important role in the provision of care to children and young people across our mental health system.

The Senior Occupational Therapist in the Safeguards Team will provide specialist mental health assessment and needs driven psychological interventions for children and adolescents (0-17 years) in acute mental health distress, as well as their carers. The Senior Occupational Therapist will also provide occupational therapy assessment and interventions as required as part of the multi-disciplinary team.

The Safeguards Teams are currently being established in the Illawarra Shoalhaven, Hunter New England, Mid North Coast, Northern NSW, Western NSW and Western Sydney Districts.
