Delirium prevention has been well studied in the literature. In particular, research has been applied to compare the benefits of pharmacological vs. non‐pharmacological interventions. It is well known that an effective method to prevent delirium is through a synergistic cooperation between the various health disciplines. However, utilising family caregivers' interventions in order to prevent or treat delirium is often overlooked.

To ensure multicomponent interventions are provided to patients with delirium at Eastern Health, Jessica McKenzie and Rebecca Reed created an occupational therapy delirium pathway. Furthermore, Jessica McKenzie and Anna Joy completed a systematic review to explore the potential impact of family caregivers' interventions on patient outcomes, family caregivers' perspectives of providing these interventions and the burden on hospital staff.

This webinar will discuss the role of family caregivers with patients with delirium and the Eastern Health occupational therapy delirium pathway.

Jessica McKenzie has worked as an occupational therapist for the past seven years.  Clinical experience and expertise spans across both the public and private health sector in Australia, with primary employers being Epworth Healthcare and Eastern Health.  Specific clinical experience and interest lies within the general medical and neurological populations, with specific focus on the use of occupational therapy assessments and interventions with patients with neurological and cognitive impairments and delirium.
