SESSION OVERVIEW

This OTA webinar will provide an overview and advanced application of Tina Champagne’s Sensory Modulation Program Component 4: Creation and Use of Sensory diets. This webinar will focus on the creation and active use of a “sensory diet” (Wilbarger, 1999). Currently, sensory diets are being used in innovative ways across all age groups and practice settings. Sensory approaches are being included in individualized treatment plans, crisis prevention plans, daily programming, and in a host of other creative ways. The increased awareness of each individual’s sensory tendencies, patterns and preferences has also assisted in avoiding crises and in reducing the use of restraint and seclusion within mental health settings. With this increased awareness, it is essential that the consumer and/or carers are supported in co-creating their own individualized “sensory diet” for prevention and crisis de-escalation purposes, and to support occupational participation. During this webinar Tina Champagne will walk you through how to effectively integrate the following essential components into a meaningful sensory diet:

• Occupational goals
• Prevention strategies
• Crisis intervention strategies
• A personalized sensory kit
• Role of carers, family or significant others
   

Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, you will be able to:

1. Co-create a personalised sensory diet to support safety and enable occupational participation
2. Evaluate the effectiveness of the sensory diet and modify over time
3. Review and apply tools and templates provided to co-create and co-evaluate sensory diets with individuals, families and groups.

PRESENTER

    Dr. Tina Champagne

Dr. Tina Champagne is the CEO of Cutchins Programs for Children and Families and an international consultant for Champagne Conferences & Consultation. She has specific expertise in the areas of trauma, attachment, sensory and trauma informed approaches, and organizational change. In 2003, she became the first OT to present with the U.S. National Office of Technical Assistance on sensory approaches, trauma informed care and restraint reduction, where her work became part of the Six Core Strategies. She has numerous publications, including two books, numerous book chapters, continuing education and research articles, and she is a reviewer for OT and nursing journals. She has received many awards for her work including the 2023 Award of Merit, the highest honor from the American Occupational Therapy Association.
