Webinar 6: Sensory Modulation Program Component 5a: Environmental Enhancements: Sensory Spaces, Sensory Rooms & Sensory Gardens
SESSION OVERVIEW
This OTA webinar will explore Tina Champagne’s Sensory Modulation Program Component 5: Environmental enhancements. The webinar will focus on creating sensory spaces: the landmark sensory room, sensory gardens and other types of sensory supportive spaces. Tina Champagne will provide an overview of the history, purpose, benefits, evidence-based examples and practical guidance on creating sensory rooms and spaces. Participants will learn how to design and use these sensory enhanced environments with diverse populations including children, adults, older adults, and across different settings. Explore how sensory environments can support a variety of therapeutic outcomes, including occupational participation. This session will also highlight how these environmental enhancements align with trauma and attachment-informed care practices, ensuring that sensory spaces are therapeutic and person-centered.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, you will be able to:
- Identify key design principles for sensory rooms, sensory gardens, and spaces that support sensory modulation for optimal occupational participation across the lifespan.
- Apply strategies for creating sensory supportive environments on limited budgets, adapting resources to specific populations and care settings.
- Differentiate between creating and co-creating a sensory supportive environment
- Adapt Sensory Room Policy or Protocols provided for use in your OT practice setting
- Develop tailored evaluation tools for use with sensory supportive environments
- Apply strategies for educating and collaborating with family, carers, and support people to meaningful use in sensory spaces to participate in daily occupations and relationships.
