OVERVIEW

This Interest Group (IG) is open to all OTA members working in or with an interest in the area of mental health. The aims of the group include:

•            To provide opportunities for networking, professional development and education.

•            To educate, provide support, and create a safe space to discuss clinical practice (research and evidence-based practice, innovative OT practice, lived experience).

Mitchell is a fourth-year Occupational Therapy student at the University of South Australia, currently working on a short literature-based research project about emerging mental health patterns for adolescents and young adults. Session overview: Early Warning Signs: Identifying changes in occupational participation (e.g., withdrawal from meaningful activities, disrupted routines, reduced self-care) as potential indicators of mental health challenges. Mental Health Risk Factors: Understanding and exploring environmental, occupational, and psychosocial risk factors that may contribute to mental health issues. Navigating the Australian Mental Health System: Guiding clients through emergency health services (e.g. Beyond Blue, Mental Health Triage Services, etc.), mental health care pathways (GP referrals, NDIS, Medicare-funded OT services) and advocating for accessibility in community-based supports.
