TOPIC: 

Exploring Neurodivergent Affirming OT Approach to Driving

Being able to drive is often thought of as rite of passage into adulthood. For many neurodivergent adults, the learning to drive process has been fraught with numerous challenges, potholes, detours and roadblocks. This interest group meeting will be a chance to hear neurodivergent lived experience of gaining “P” plates and how OTs can best provide a neurodivergent affirming approach to the issues of driving.

Presenter

Nicole de la Perrelle is an occupational therapist, wife, mother of two young boys, and owner of two cheeky dogs! Her journey in occupational therapy (for over 20 years now!) has been defined by a commitment to supporting therapists to achieve deliver best practice and compassionate care, while helping her clients achieve meaningful outcomes. She loves research but especially loves applying evidence to real world clinical practice and making best-practice recommendations.

Clare Keogh

Presenter

Clare Keogh is a multiply neurodivergent occupational therapist (neurotypes: Autistic, ADHD, Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum, and Dandy-Walker Syndrome). She is also a dog mum, a nature explorer, music lover and creative thinker. She describes her neurodivergent profile as "very spiky. Some things are relatively straightforward to do. For other things, I must rely on tools, or find other ways to do the tasks. This includes driving!" Clare runs her own sole trader OT business in Melbourne's west for neurodivergent young people and families. She has strong interests in family-centred practice, health care as a helping profession, and the ways OT works with the person’s own lived experience to create change. She uses her lived experience combined with her professional knowledge to guide clients and families in developing a holistic understanding of neurodivergence, disability, and what that means for individual and family occupations.
