Emergency and disaster situations are challenging for everyone but even more so for people with a disability who are reliant on others to provide everyday function-based supports. A focus on Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction and Person Centred Emergency Preparedness is essential to prepare, prevent, manage and respond to emergency and disaster situations, thereby ensuring the heath, safety and wellbeing of individuals.

Information Session Overview

The increasing frequency of natural disasters over the past few years including global pandemic, bushfires and floods heightens the importance of OTs being informed and prepared to enable them and their clients to navigate through emergency and disaster situations.

The introduction of a new NDIS Practice Standard on emergency and disaster management in November 2021 applicable to registered NDIS providers strengthens the importance and relevance of this topic to OTs.

Key areas that will be covered include:

  • The importance of emergency and disaster management planning for both clinicians and clients
  • The drivers for Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction
  • The impact that a lack of planning and preparation for emergency situations can have on individuals (across the life span) who are reliant on others to provide function-based support
  • A model of Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness
  • How Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness can be incorporated into practice at an individual, community and organisational level with the inclusion of case examples
  • Opportunities for OTs to take a lead role in Person-Centred Emergency Preparedness in the community

This session is suitable for all occupational therapists at any career stage.
