We know there are significant workforce challenges and opportunities for the occupational therapy profession, such as attracting and retaining OTs. To address these challenges, we've consulted with our members to develop a workforce development plan.

The OTA Workforce Development Project is our evidence-based approach to improving workforce capability and support for occupational therapists.


Member Priorities
Our members' workforce priorities include:
- Enhance preparation for professional practice for occupational therapy students
- Enhance the new graduate experience
- Retain experienced occupational therapists in the profession
- Support a safe practicing environment for occupational therapy
- Recognise professional skills and achievements
- Support viable occupational therapy careers
- Promote digital health capabilities in the profession.
Our Advocacy
- We work with stakeholders including other allied health peak bodies and AHPA (Allied Health Professions Association) to advance a strategic approach that recognises the unique scope and challenges of the occupational therapy workforce.
- We engage with the Department of Health and Aged Care, and the Chief Allied Health Officer to share data and information.
- We engage with AHPRA and the Occupational Therapy Board to ensure that OTs are supported to gain and maintain registration without undue regulatory burden.
- We engage with consultations on key national reforms project including:
- Development of a National Allied Health Workforce Strategy
- The Independent review of health practitioner regulatory settings (Kruk Review)
- The independent review of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS)
