MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATIONS MODULE

CLIENT-CENTRED PRACTICE AND CONTINUOUS CLINICAL IMPROVEMENTS

All occupational therapists working in mental health should seek to ensure that they are gathering feedback and input from clients, experienced mental health occupational therapists and other mental health professionals as part of their practice. Practitioners should also develop their own capacity to provide supervision and support to other mental health professionals.

In this course, occupational therapists will draw on core foundational knowledge to enable clinical practice that is culturally safe, reflective, feedback informed, occupation-based, and client-centred.

Built on the OTA Mental Health Capability Framework, this self-directed eLearning and Development Module will assist occupational therapists in focusing their scope of practice on delivering effective and tailored mental health occupational therapy that is client-centred and draws on continuous clinical improvement within practice.

Developed by OTs for OTs, this module provides an introduction to practice that draws on client-centred practice and continuous clinical improvement.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Engage with lived experience to evaluate and address personal biases, centring anti-racist clinical practice.
  • Compare and effectively apply the principles of client-centred and occupation-based practice in mental health settings.
  • Understand the critical role of clinical supervision in professional development, as described by professional models of supervision, and their specific relevance to mental health occupational therapy.
  • Identify and apply key components, skills and models of reflective practice in professional settings, which incorporate feedback from consumers, peers, and supervisors to improve professional competencies.
  • Develop skills to gather and integrate feedback from various sources, including consumers, experienced occupational therapists, and other mental health professionals.
