Hot Topic – Unpacking Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder  

SESSION OVERVIEW 

Join us for this session designed to deepen your understanding of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder that is not well understood. 

This session is presented in partnership with the National Organisation for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (NOFASD) and is being held on International FASD Awareness Day. 

FASD describes the impacts on the brain and body of individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol. FASD is a lifelong disability. 

Building understanding of FASD, will assist OTs to effectively support individuals affected, given the impacts across many domains on their daily life across the lifespan. This may include challenges with motor skills, physical health, learning, attention, emotional regulation and social skills.   

In this session, you will learn: 

• What Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is and its clinical manifestations 

• The prevalence of FASD and its functional impacts throughout the lifespan 

• Importance of FASD awareness for Occupational Therapists 

• Effective strategies and OT practices for supporting individuals with FASD and their families 

• How OTs can help build capacity within our community to prevent and manage this complex and hidden disability 

The session will include a panel of lived experience and expert OT practitioners sharing their valuable insights and experiences of FASD.

PRESENTERS

   Rebecca Ball 

Rebecca Ball is a special education teacher and occupational therapist with a diverse and extensive career around Australia. Rebecca is a passionate advocate for people with additional needs. She works collaboratively to ensure inclusive practices are embedded to support children and their families. Rebecca is a Senior Consultant with NOFASD Australia aiming to build capacity for families and delivers training for education and allied health professionals. She is Director of HopscotchED Consultancy and Partner at BrainyCo 

Sinead Freeman 

Sinead Freeman is an Occupational Therapist and Clinical Coordinator with NOFASD Australia. She is passionate about building allied health professionals' awareness of FASD and empowering them with the skills and knowledge to support their clients through family-centred care. 

 Christine Brooks 

Christine is the caregiver of a teenager with FASD and is also dedicated to the wellbeing of a number of students who face the difficulties of living with this hidden disorder. Her extensive teaching career includes time working in a remote Northern Territory community, providing parent education, teaching early primary levels, and supporting teens. Christine’s lived experience with FASD along with her passion for the well-being of young people in the education system has led her to commit to educating the educators about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

 Cate Hilly 

Cate has enjoyed collaborating with children and families for over 20 years to participate in meaningful occupations. Cate is currently a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidate through Australian Catholic University investigating the feasibility of the Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance ApproachTM (CO-OP) to improve performance and participation for children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and motor coordination difficulties. She has received an Occupational Therapy Research Foundation grant to support this research. Cate is FASD informed and has previous experience working in a multidisciplinary FASD diagnostic service and provided services to children and families in Southeast Queensland. Cate works part time in a private paediatric service in Canberra to support FASD diagnosis for children and children with FASD and families. 

 Jessica Hannan 

Jessica is an occupational therapist with 7 years experience working with children of various disabilities. She has worked extensively with the FASD population and is a strong advocate for highlighting the positive attributes they can add to our community. She has presented at various conferences on FASD and was appointed on the Western Australia University board as a clinical advisor for the diploma in FASD. Jessica believes that education is key in helping those with FASD achieve the best outcomes throughout their life.
