MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATIONS MODULE

MENTAL HEALTH OCCUPATION-FOCUSED INTERVENTIONS & THERAPEUTIC STRATEGIES

Occupation-focused planning and the use of interventions and strategies are at the core of mental health occupational therapy practice. Occupation-focused interventions focus on motivation, leisure and play, habits and routines, meaningful roles, prevocational and vocational rehab, life skills, functional cognition, physical activity, community tenure and independence, communication and interaction, self-management, emotional regulation, and environment. While occupational therapists may draw on a range of strategies, all practitioners should seek to develop and maintain capability in the core strategies and interventions articulated in the OTA Mental Health Capability Framework. This module will provide you with new knowledge and skills regarding occupation-focused interventions and therapeutic strategies.

Built on the OTA Mental Health Capability Framework, this self-directed eLearning and Development Module will assist occupational therapists in focusing their scope of practice on mental health to build foundational knowledge and skills in occupational-focused interventions and therapeutic approaches.

Developed by OTs for OTs, this module provides an introduction to occupational-focused interventions and therapeutic approaches.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Understand and use activity grading and adaptation strategies to support occupation-focused interventions.
  • Understand and use therapeutic use of self-strategies to support occupation-focused interventions.
  • Understand that occupations are at the core of occupational therapy practice and use occupation as a method of intervention and an outcome.
  • Use activity scheduling as an evidence-based means of supporting recovery and participation in activities of daily living.
  • Understand and define the role of volition and motivation as a foundation for participation in occupations and draw on assessments and interventions focused on re-motivation where appropriate.
  • Establish and facilitate group interventions, both as a means of implementing structured therapeutic techniques in a group setting, and as a deliberate therapeutic program that draws on interaction with peers to support recovery.
