The Sleepwise eManual is a useful Resource to utilize with the Sleep With Disability Course.

If you have a previous edition of the eManual please note that this is a new and extensively updated Manual.

It is not essential to have the Manual to complete the Sleep with Disability Course.

SLEEPWISE eMANUAL 

The new e-manual incorporates research over the last 15 years and information from Annie OÇonnells overseas Churchill Fellowship, clinical case studies and feedback from participants from the 2-day training.  

The Manual Includes: 

  • Sleep Education for parents and carers individually rather than a group format – a single Power Point presentation available 

  • A Pre and Post Evaluation survey to assess an allied health or educational practitioner’s current knowledge, skill and confidence in a sleep interventionβ€― 

  • Updated references and strategies including CBT, Relaxation, Calm Breathing and Yoga 

  • Updated resources: Additional developmental information; Screening tools; Links to formal and valid sleep questionnaires; One week sleep diary; New Sleep Stories; Positive sleep practices for older children and adolescents; Reference materials of allied health and educational practitioners with new sections related to sleep research and cerebral palsy; New published case studies and 50 case studies. 

  • Discussions on topics such as bed safety, co-sleeping, ignoring (extinction behavioural method). 

The e-manual is available to individual allied health and educational practitioners as a clinical guide with electronic links to all resources in the sleep tools kit that can be downloaded or printed. Within organisations we allow 1 manual to 5 therapists/educators. 

Comparison of the original Sleepwise Resource Manual to the latest Sleepwise e-manual 

You may already have a prior edition of the Manual and be wondering if it is it worth getting the updated version. The latest edition has been exetensivly updated. Here is information compairng the new edition with the previous.

The 1st Edition of Sleepwise – A Resource Manual – Positive Sleep Practices for Young Children with Developmental Delay was published in 2005 and reprinted in 2007.
Focus age group children 2- 6 years. 

The 3rd Edition of Sleepwise – A Resource e-Manual – Positive Sleep Practices for Children and Adolescents with Developmental Disabilities was released in June 2022.β€―
Focus age group 2- 18 yearsβ€―β€― 

Both manuals are clinical guides that provide the protocol for a sleep intervention based on: 

  • Sleep education for parents /carers 

  • Assessment using sleep diary and sleep interview 

  • Development of a sleep plan based on developmental , communication, sensory and behavioural strategies 

  • Support and Monitoring 

  • Published case studies 

  • Reference Material of Allied Health Workers 

  • Access to forms and resources that are reproducible

This Manual is suitable for Student & Beginner OTs as well as Allied Health Therapists and Educators who support families with children in the home, paediatric or community setting.

Annie O’Connell

 

 

Annie is an occupational therapist with over 30 years of experience and has worked in a variety of paediatric settings in Australia and overseas.

In 2003 Annie completed her M.App.Sc (OT) by research investigating ‘Sleep Disturbance in Children with Autism and the use of a Waterbed’.

From 2003 to 2015 Annie was the Lead Practitioner for the ‘Sleepwise project’ addressing sleep disturbance in young people with developmental disabilities developed by Child and Youth Services, Disability Services in SA.  Two research grants from the Apex Foundation For Research Into Intellectual Disability Limited allowed the evaluation of the Sleepwise approach for children 2–6 years of age and 8–18 years of age.
