PAIN SCIENCE AND PAIN MANAGEMENT OVER THE LIFESPAN : ADULT AND GERIATRIC PAIN MANAGEMENT 

This course will provide an understanding on the impact of pain on cognition, affective states, and physical capacity.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is suitable for new graduates, early career therapists and experienced therapists.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the workshop participants will :

  • Assessment of pain in adults in the context of adult life stages and transitions
  • Understand the impact of pain on cognition, affective states, and physical capacity
  • Understand the various developmental stages of adulthood, from early adulthood, mid- adulthood and aging
  • Understand the impact of the developmental disruption on adulthood
  • To develop skills in assessing adult clients with pain
  • To explore pain management strategies in the adult and older adult population
  • Optimise participation in social and parent roles
  • Return to work, leisure, sleep, driving and community participation and intimate occupations
  • To integrate learning through case studies and small group discussion

PRESENTER

 Fiona Thomas

Ms Fiona Thomas has worked as an occupational therapist in the field of musculoskeletal rehab and pain management for 25 years. She started her OT career in hand therapy which lead into industrial rehabilitation/ work conditioning programmes and then into pain management. She has worked both in private and public hospital settings and is currently at the Caulfield Pain Management and Research Centre and Pain Specialists Australia. She received a small hospital research grant in 2010 to look at self-efficacy and functional outcomes and has been actively involved in the research arm of the unit. At present her interests are in promoting the role of occupational therapy approaches within pain management, promoting activity and work engagement within a pain population, biofeedback, graded motor imagery and the therapeutic value of activity in modifying pain and sensory processing mechanisms. She has presented at the pain management special interest group, Australian Pain Society conferences, MOVE and on functional approaches in the elderly pain population for the NARI (National Aging and Research Institute). Fiona is currently the occupational therapy representative on the Australian Pain Society Relationships Committee
