As OT’s, we can’t escape that our major models of practice hold “body, mind and spirit” out to us as being vital. Yet actually addressing spirituality in OT remains largely taboo or an isolated academic exercise. There is little research, training or consensus regarding how to address spirituality with clients - particularly in Australia. The result of all this is that many, if not most, Australian OT’s are awkward about spirituality.

This webinar seeks to provide an introduction to the main themes involved with addressing Spirituality in OT. This includes appreciating the evidence base behind it, understanding what spiritual themes are and how we see it in OT, and why it should matter to us. Then we’ll honestly discuss how to practically address it as clinicians in a variety of settings, and what some helpful resources and first steps might be.

How will this webinar enable participants to work occupationally with clients/patients?

Body, mind AND spirit form the basis of our OT understanding of a person. Spirituality underpins many occupational choices and is not only a matter of isolated private beliefs. Rather, it impacts a client’s motivation for participating in OT treatment and his/her working through suffering. It is highly social and cultural and provides many clients with their main support network when disability or disease come. Finally, it is our way of making sense of our place in the world and finding meaning in our occupations.

This webinar is suitable for all Occupational Therapists including Students.

Heather So: I graduated from the University of Sydney in 2007 with my Bachelor of App. Sc. (OT). I also obtained my Graduate Diploma of Divinity from Ridley College in 2017. In terms of my occupational roles, I’m married and have 3 young daughters. I’ve worked in adult settings both in Sydney and the UK, before entering into paediatric practice over 8 years ago. I now work part time as a paediatric OT in private practice. I started becoming more interested in addressing spirituality alongside body and mind within OT because of my family. So this Webinar introduction to Spirituality and OT originates from my experiences as a clinician, mother, aunty and granddaughter. These ideas have been discussed with many other therapists, including a support group of Christian OT’s. Finally, this content has been sharpened by research and framed around the work of some great leaders in the field of spiritual care.

Sarah Cole: I graduated from the University of Sydney in 2005 with my Bachelor of App. Sc. (OT), and then from the University of Wollongong in 2017 with a Masters of Science (Dementia Care). Over my career I’ve worked in a variety of different settings, both adult and paediatric, in acute and community based centres and in rural and metro hospitals in NSW. I currently work full time as a Team Leader in the Rehabilitation, Aged Care and Stroke (RACS) service) at Blacktown Mount Druitt Hospitals. In regards to my occupational roles, I’m a sister, daughter and aunt. I’m passionate about growing and developing occupational therapists to be the best versions of themselves through education, support and experience.
