Module 5: Working with Children, Young People & Families - Interventions and Therapeutic Strategies
Build your knowledge of evidence-based interventions and therapeutic strategies that support meaningful participation for children and young people. This module helps occupational therapists integrate culturally responsive, occupation-focused approaches into everyday routines and environments.
Program Overview
Practice Essentials: Working with Children, Young People & Families – Module 5 focuses on intervention planning and therapeutic strategies to support occupational performance and participation in children and young people. Learners will explore the core principles of evidence-based, occupation-centred practice and develop a deeper understanding of how occupational therapists work across environments to deliver responsive, tailored supports. The module includes an overview of common intervention approaches relevant to various diagnoses and developmental presentations, with practical strategies for implementation in real-world settings.
Participants will learn how to collaborate with children, families, kinship groups, and communities to embed therapeutic strategies into daily life, with a strong emphasis on cultural responsiveness and the use of natural environments. Key themes include using occupation as the primary therapeutic medium, addressing activity limitations and participation barriers, and considering body functions and environmental factors in intervention design. The module also highlights the importance of ongoing professional supervision to support clinical reasoning and capability development.
Through interactive content and reflective activities, learners will gain practical tools and critical insights to support effective, inclusive, and meaningful occupational therapy interventions that align with the values and goals of the children and families they serve.
