OT Role in Diagnostic Assessments: Navigating Australia’s New FASD Guidelines
This session explores how occupational therapists can play a vital role in FASD diagnostic assessment across the lifespan by understanding the new FASD Guidelines (2025), the nine impacted developmental domains, and practical pathways to becoming a FASD-informed practitioner who supports individuals and families to access appropriate funding and care.
Program Overview
Occupational therapists have the skills and capability to support diagnostic assessment across ages and developmental domains. In May 2025 updated Australian Diagnostic Guidelines were released to support the identification of the most common, non-genetic neurodevelopmental disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
Up to nine developmental domains may be impacted by prenatal exposure to alcohol and OTs can play a critical role in identifying specific strengths and challenges experienced by individuals across the lifespan. Funding support is potentially available for those impacted. This session will explore the features of the new guidelines and provide a pathway for OTs to become much needed FASD informed practitioner.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
-
Explain the role of occupational therapists in diagnostic assessments across ages and developmental domains, with a focus on neurodevelopmental conditions
-
Describe the key features of the updated Australian Diagnostic Guidelines (May 2025) for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
-
Identify the nine developmental domains commonly impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure and understand how these domains influence functional performance across the lifespan
-
Recognise the unique contribution of occupational therapy in assessing strengths and challenges for individuals with suspected or confirmed FASD
-
Outline practical steps to become a FASD-informed practitioner, including knowledge, skills, and resources required for best practice
-
Discuss pathways for funding support available for individuals impacted by FASD and how OTs can assist families in accessing these supports.
This session is suitable for:
-
Occupational therapists across all career stages, keen to learn more about FASD and the new FASD Guidelines
-
Occupational therapists working in paediatrics, disability, mental health, community, justice, or adult services
