Hot Topic - Continence Across the Lifespan – Essentials for Occupational Therapists

This practical focused Hot Topic session explores the essential knowledge and strategies OTs need to know for continence management across the lifespan, highlighting the impact of continence challenges on occupational performance quality of life and participation.

Program Overview

Continence is a vital yet often overlooked aspect of daily life that significantly influences occupational performance, participation, and quality of life. This engaging session is designed to equip occupational therapists with foundational knowledge and practical insights into continence management across the lifespan—from early childhood to older adulthood.

The session will begin with a focused presentation exploring the mechanics of continence, highlighting what every OT should know to support clients in diverse settings. Following the presentation, a panel discussion will bring together expert voices, providing perspectives on the management of continence and its functional implications.  There will be the opportunity to have your questions answered by our panel who have experience in paediatrics, women’s health, adults and older people.

Key topics that will be included:

  • Anatomy and physiology of continence across the lifespan

  • The role of occupational therapy in continence promotion and management

  • How incontinence impacts occupational performance, routines, and participation

  • Practical strategies for assessment and intervention in various clinical contexts

  • Collaborative approaches to continence care across professions
