Continence Fundamentals for OTs working with Older Adults

Continence Fundamentals for OTs working with Older Adults

This session supports occupational therapists working with older adults to build confidence in continence care through evidence-informed strategies, interdisciplinary collaboration, and practical tools for assessment, intervention, and communication.

Program Overview

This 90-minute practical focused session is designed for occupational therapists who work with older adults and want to build confidence and competence in supporting continence care within their practice.

Co-facilitated by an experienced continence nurse and an occupational therapist, the session will provide a practical, evidence-informed overview of the role of occupational therapy in promoting continence, enhancing dignity, and improving quality of life for older people across community, residential, and hospital settings.

The environmental, cognitive, and functional factors that impact continence will be explored with participants learning how to incorporate continence-focused assessments and interventions into everyday practice.

The session will also provide guidance on interdisciplinary collaboration, referral pathways, and how to engage clients and families in sensitive conversations about continence.

  • Understand the common causes and types of incontinence in older adults
  • Identify the occupational therapist’s role in continence care and how it complements nursing and interdisciplinary input
  • Learn how to assess the environmental, functional, and cognitive factors that influence continence
