OTA Innovate RAP Launch & Dr Terri Janke Keynote

OTA Innovate RAP Launch & Dr Terri Janke Keynote

This member-only webinar introduces OTA’s Innovate RAP and features Dr Terri Janke on Ethical AI and Cultural Safety: A First Nations Perspective. Attendees will explore how AI affects Indigenous knowledge and culture, and gain practical strategies to ensure occupational therapy practice remains culturally safe and ethically responsible.

Program Overview

This webinar will begin with an introduction to Occupational Therapy Australia’s new Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), highlighting the association’s ongoing commitment to embedding reconciliation into everyday practice.

Following this, Dr Terri Janke, a leading expert in Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property and First Nations legal and cultural rights, will deliver a keynote titled Ethical AI and Cultural Safety: A First Nations Perspective. She will explore how AI can affect Indigenous knowledge, data sovereignty, and culture when cultural protocols and proper consultation are not observed, and when digital systems draw on outdated, incomplete, or insensitive sources. Terri will also examine how these challenges can impact cultural integrity and reinforce harmful narratives, while emphasising the vital role of Indigenous voices in guiding the ethical and respectful use of cultural information.

The webinar will continue with an interactive segment that considers how these issues intersect with occupational therapy practice. Attendees will gain practical insights on applying these principles in their work to ensure the use of technology and digital tools is culturally safe, ethically responsible, and supportive of clients’ health, identity, and culture. By understanding these risks and strategies, OTs can contribute to culturally safe practice and uphold professional standards in a rapidly evolving digital environment.

This member-only session is highly recommended for clinicians, academics, researchers, and educators at all career stages who wish to engage thoughtfully with AI while maintaining cultural integrity and gain confidence in their practice.
