Learners will be equipped with knowledge to allow them to harness guidance and mentorship to advance their capabilities. The module explores the crucial aspects of advocating for clients and navigating complex care systems to ensure their needs are comprehensively addressed. Curriculum examines approaches to empower older individuals in shaping their own lives, covering how to facilitate discussions around potential risks, collaboratively devise safety strategies, and uphold their final decisions through transparent communication 

Learners will gain strategies for proactively enhancing their professional expertise through targeted development, ensuring their practice remains at the forefront of the field. It further guides learners through processes of self-assessment and reflective practice, vital tools for ongoing clinical improvement and evaluation. 

The content in this module relates to the capabilities outlined in Domain 4 of the OTA Capability Framework for Occupational Therapists Working with Older People. 

After completing this module, you will be able to: 

• Develop your understanding of supervision models and approaches. 

• Understand that seeking feedback from clients, based on set measures, is an important foundation for the therapeutic relationship and a means of ensuring that interventions are effective. 

• Consider how you may reflect on your own practice and skills regularly. 

• Understand the principles of advocacy and case management. 

• Know how to seek out and complete clinical and professional development that draws on best available evidence and supports the development of people's competencies and clinical outcomes. 

• Understand how to use feedback informed practice when working with older people and their significant others to better understand their experiences and wishes. 

• Develop an awareness of the interplay between duty of care and dignity of risk when working with older people. 

• Have confidence in providing advice to older people about the potential risks associated with their decisions and strategies and education on risk mitigation, whilst respecting their ultimate decisions. 

This module is suitable for: 
Early career OTs or more experienced OTs transitioning into roles where they work with older people.
