RECORDED WEBINAR SUMMARY
Risk Assessments in mental health and psychosocial occupational therapy clinical practice are critical to ensure any areas of concern or risk are identified and strategies developed to mitigate the risk.
Developing clear and comprehensive risk assessments for clients with mental health and psychosocial concerns is a skill and takes practice.
This session will explore:
- What is a Risk Assessment
- Why we need to complete a Risk Assessment
- How it may inform our work
- Use of clinical examples to aid in understanding
The session will commence with a presentation on risk assessments in mental health and psychosocial OT practice and then be followed by a panel discussion with experienced mental health OTs sharing their valuable insights and experience on risk assessment through the use of practical examples and case scenarios.
Risk assessment in mental health across all age ranges will be discussed with specifics when working with children and adolescents also explored. The importance of therapist safety will also be addressed.
There will be an opportunity to submit your questions prior to the session as well as during the session as time permits.
This practical focussed session is valuable for OTs who may have completed OTA’s Mental Health Foundation Modules who wish to explore this topic further or for any OTs working in mental health / psychosocial practice who wish to have a greater understanding on the how to of risk assessments.

- Increased understanding of the risk assessment process through the use of clinical examples and practical insights from experienced OTs
- Develop an understanding of the therapeutic process factors clinicians may need to consider with risk assessments.

Tammie Addley
Tammie Addley is an experienced mental health OT based at her Morningside private practice, working with teenagers, young adults and their families. Her practice is creative, trauma-informed, strengths based, and draws upon ACT frameworks and evidence based interventions. Tammie has a passion for working collaboratively with medical and allied health colleagues to deliver great outcomes for young people. She believes working in mental health she will never be bored, and in her spare time thoroughly enjoys her teaching at UQ with final year OT students, who want to develop their clinical skills in mental health.

Kylie Carney
Kylie Carney has 25 years’ experience as an occupational therapist, predominantly in the area of mental health, neurodivergence and psychosocial disability. Her experience includes private practice, case manager / occupational therapist and Team Leader roles in community mental health teams, Clinical Governance Team Leader, occupational therapist in a private psychiatric hospital and Coordinator in a mental health NGO. Kylie’s current role is as a sole trader Occupational Therapist and Owner at Blue Lotus Allied Health where she provides occupational therapy services to adult clients funded through NDIS and the Medicare Better Access to Mental Health initiative.

Catherine Daly
Catherine Daly is an Occupational Therapist/Child and Family Therapist who has worked extensively with infants, children and families requiring specialist assessment and intervention for psychosocial, mental health and developmental difficulties. As part of her therapeutic work, Catherine helps parents to facilitate more meaningful interactions with their children. Her experience in public mental health and non-government organisations includes community, hospital-based, consultation liaison, and acute settings as an infant mental health therapist, occupational therapist, case manager, and in senior leadership roles. Catherine currently works with OTA in the Professional Practice Advisor mental health role and has a small Brisbane based private practice called What About Play.
