Module 5: Working with Older People – Working in Aged Care Environments

Module 5: Working with Older People – Working in Aged Care Environments

Enhance your collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams, family engagement, and partnerships with care coordinators to optimise care well-being outcomes for older people.

Program Overview

Practice Essentials: Working with Older People – Module 5 is designed to enhance occupational therapists' skills and knowledge in effective collaboration within multidisciplinary teams, engaging with families, and partnering with care coordinators and other key individuals integral to the care and wellbeing of older people.

This comprehensive module provides the essential knowledge base needed to excel and truly make a difference in your work with older people. It is specifically crafted to lay the groundwork for occupational therapists embarking on their careers in this area, or for experienced OTs seeking to upskill, transition into this dynamic practice area or are returning to practice after a break. It prepares you to deliver services that are secure, principled, and culturally sensitive across various practice environments.

Within this module, practitioners will gain insight into the unique contributions of various aged care professions, appreciating how each role, including their own, collectively enhances client well-being. A significant focus will be placed on acknowledging the vital presence of family and informal caregivers in an older person's life, alongside recognising the profound impact of their caregiving responsibilities. Learners will explore strategies to facilitate access to crucial support services for these caregivers, promoting their well-being.

The module covers the function of coordination and partnership roles that bridge gaps in support for older people, detailing how these intersect with the occupational therapist's own responsibilities. Practitioners will learn to foster collaboration with allied health assistants, and complimentary services within residential and transitional care environments, ensuring residents have access to personalised and meaningful daily pursuits.

The curriculum addresses the critical practice of involving older individuals and their appointed decision-makers in setting goals and planning interventions. Learners will build a robust knowledge base of local community resources and assistance options, enabling them to confidently connect older people with relevant external supports.

The content in this module relates to the capabilities outlined in Domain 5 of the OTA Capability Framework for occupational therapists working with older people

  • Understand how care coordinators, care partners, and other intermediary roles support older people and how their roles intersect with your own role.

  • Consider how to best collaborate with lifestyle practitioners in residential aged care and transitional care settings to ensure tailored occupational engagement opportunities are available for the older people residing in the facility.

  • Build skills and confidence to effectively and safely work with allied health assistants to support the delivery of tailored interventions.

  • Understand the importance of working with the older person and their substitute decision-maker when making decisions around goals and interventions.

  • Build your knowledge of key community services and supports that are important for the older people living in that area and understand how to make relevant referrals or connections for the person on their behalf.
