Program Overview
Practice Essentials: Working with Older People – Module 1 provides crucial information about the aged care system, covering relevant legislation, frameworks, and funding, alongside positive ageing, life transitions, OT models of practice, and vital culturally responsive care.
This comprehensive module provides the essential knowledge base needed to excel and truly make a difference in your work with older people. It is specifically crafted to lay the groundwork for occupational therapists embarking on their careers in this area, or for experienced OTs seeking to upskill, transition into this dynamic practice area or are returning to practice after a break. It prepares you to deliver services that are secure, principled, and culturally sensitive across various practice environments.
Through a series of focused lessons, participants will delve into theoretical constructs and guiding principles, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the intricate biological, psychological, social, cultural, environmental, and unique life experience factors influencing the lives of older people.
The curriculum extensively examines the legal frameworks, professional codes, policy guidelines, and quality benchmarks that govern occupational therapy within the aged care sector, including critical areas such as quality initiatives, regulatory models, and funding systems. This ensures learners are equipped to navigate the complexities of the system and deliver compliant, high-quality care whilst importantly promoting the rights, safety, and inclusion of all older people.
Learners will engage with principles of cultural humility and safety, preparing them to consider the unique needs of culturally diverse and marginalised individuals as they age,, deepening their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures by reflecting on the profound impact of colonisation and intergenerational trauma.
