Module 3: Working with Children, Young People & Families - Across Diverse Contexts and Teams
Deepen your knowledge of team-based practice, community engagement, and professional supervision to enhance your effectiveness and confidence as a paediatric occupational therapist.
Program Overview
Practice Essentials: Working with Children, Young People & Families – Module 3 focuses on building the professional skills required to work collaboratively across systems, disciplines, and settings to support children, young people, and their families. Whether you're early in your career or transitioning into paediatric practice, this module will help clarify the occupational therapy role and scope of practice, while strengthening your ability to advocate for occupational therapy in interprofessional teams. You'll also explore how to delegate and supervise effectively when working with allied health assistants, and how to foster shared goals and clear communication across service settings.
This module examines strategies for enabling participation in both educational and community contexts, including the use of multi-tiered approaches in schools and facilitating access to local services. Learners will gain practical skills for collaborating with educators, supporting inclusive education, and connecting families with community-based resources that promote engagement and wellbeing. The final section introduces models of clinical and professional supervision that support reflective practice and lifelong learning. You’ll explore supervision as a tool for building capability and ensuring ethical, high-quality practice, both as a supervisee and a future supervisor.
Through reflective activities and real-world applications, learners will emerge with a broader view of occupational therapy practice and stronger skills for working within the systems that shape children's lives.
This module is mapped to the OTA Capability Framework for Occupational Therapists Working with Children, Young People and Families and embeds reflective activities to encourage critical thinking, cultural responsiveness, and confident application of knowledge in real-world settings.
