Oedema: How to identify, assess & manage

This workshop will provide an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of oedema as well as the underlying mechanisms of oedema development. The occupational therapy role in the management of oedema will be a key focus.

Program Overview

Are you hesitant to talk about swelling with your clients because you’re not sure what to recommend?

Have you prescribed compression garments that didn’t quite get the results you hoped for?

Then this hands-on workshop is designed for you.

Oedema is a common challenge experienced by a range of people, however managing it effectively requires more than just trial-and-error.

This comprehensive workshop will equip you with the confidence, clinical reasoning, and practical skills to assess oedema accurately and deliver tailored, evidence-based interventions that actually work.


After attending this workshop you will be able to:

  • Confidently identify signs, symptoms and types of oedema
  • Understand the underlying causes and risk factors that influence oedema development
  • Conduct a thorough assessment to determine treatment suitability and safety
  • Select and apply appropriate treatment techniques, including compression bandaging, garments and wraps
  • Develop the skills to apply basic compression bandaging for both upper and lower limbs
  • Learn how to problem-solve garment prescription for different presentations
  • Gain insight into advanced oedema management techniques
  • Practice with a range of compression products to build your clinical confidence
  • Bring your own case studies for group discussion and tailored feedback

Suitable for OTs at any career stage, who are new to working with oedema or looking to refresh their knowledge. This workshop is also suitable for physiotherapists who are most welcome to attend.

Dr Amanda Pigott

Dr Amanda Pigott is an occupational therapist with extensive experience in oedema and lymphoedema management. Amanda has worked with a wide range of conditions requiring oedema management. Amanda has obtained her PhD, has worked in the cancer-related lymphoedema service at the Princess Alexandra Hospital for 10 years and now works as a research fellow at the University of Queensland investigating the causes and effects of oedema.
