Module 2: Working with People with Pain – Assessment, planning and outcome measures

This module explores a range of evidence-based assessments that provide insight into the lived experience of pain, including its impact on daily function, emotional well-being, and occupational engagement.

It will build your knowledge of common outcome measures relevant to pain, improving your ability to monitor progress, evaluate intervention effectiveness, and support goal attainment in a meaningful and measurable way.

Program Overview

Practice Essentials: Working with people with pain – Module 2 will equip you with a comprehensive understanding of assessment and planning strategies that support an occupation-focused and person-centred approach to working with people with pain.

The Practice Essentials program is specifically crafted to lay the groundwork for occupational therapists embarking on their careers in this area, or for experienced OTs seeking to upskill, transition into this dynamic practice area or are returning to practice after a break.

Module 2 will deepen your understanding of how assessing psychological risk, sensory processing, occupational performance and the environment context contributes to a holistic approach to supporting people with pain.

It reinforces the importance of context and occupational focus in assessment and planning and will build your knowledge in applying appropriate outcome measures to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, track progress and guide treatment decisions specific to pain.

Aligned to the OTA Capability Framework for Occupational Therapists Working with People with Pain, this learning experience will prepare you to deliver services that are evidence-based, ethical, and culturally sensitive across various practice environments.

After completing this module, you will:

  • Be able to identify which self-report or observational pain assessment measures are suitable for specific clinical populations.

  • Have greater confidence in identifying key signs of psychological risk in a person with persistent pain and identifying issues that may require further referral for psychological management.

  • Be aware of modifiable psychological risk factors and psychological strengths that indicate readiness for a self-management-based approach.

  • Better understand the occupational therapy model of practice which is most appropriate for assessing clients in your clinical context who are experiencing pain.

  • Be able to identify assessments which can guide nociceptive or persistent pain treatment from an occupational therapy perspective.

  • Have developed your ability to identify sensory processing assessments which are clinically relevant for different populations.

  • Be familiar with how to apply occupational therapy models when working with people with pain.

  • Recognise the impact of social systems on the experience and expression of nociceptive and persistent pain.
