Module 4: Working with Children, Young People & Families - Information Gathering and Planning in Paediatric Occupational Therapy
Develop your skills in holistic information gathering, collaborative goal setting, and intervention planning to deliver safe, culturally responsive, and evidence-informed paediatric occupational therapy. This module supports occupational therapists to use a range of tools and approaches that reflect the lived experiences, priorities, and strengths of children, young people, and their families.
Program Overview
Practice Essentials: Working with Children, Young People & Families – Module 4 equips occupational therapists with essential knowledge and practical strategies to guide effective information gathering and intervention planning in paediatric settings. This module emphasises the importance of understanding the child within their everyday environments, considering personal, cultural, familial, and environmental factors, to support meaningful participation and goal achievement.
Learners will explore how to select and use a variety of assessment tools, including those that are occupation-based, participation-focused, and designed to measure body functions, personal factors, and environmental influences. The module also covers strengths-based and culturally responsive approaches to collaborative goal setting, ensuring that therapy goals reflect the values, identities, and priorities of children, young people, and their families. Through this process, therapists are supported to uphold cultural safety, build reciprocal partnerships, and ensure relevance and respect in their clinical decision-making.
Additional topics include outcome measurement, contribution to diagnostic processes, and strategies for risk assessment and safety planning in paediatric practice. Reflective activities throughout the module support learners to integrate critical thinking and self-awareness into their evolving professional reasoning. By the end of this module, therapists will be better prepared to plan and deliver tailored, responsive, and ethical occupational therapy for children and families across diverse contexts.
This module is mapped to the OTA Capability Framework for Occupational Therapists Working with Children, Young People and Families and embeds reflective activities to encourage critical thinking, cultural responsiveness, and confident application of knowledge in real-world settings.
