Module 1: Working with People with Pain – Pain management systems, the therapeutic process and guiding principles
This module will equip you with essential knowledge to build your understanding of the complex nature of pain from a uniquely occupational therapy perspective. You will explore contemporary perspectives on pain, moving beyond traditional biomedical views to consider the biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors that contribute to the pain experience
Program Overview
Practice Essentials: Working with people with pain – Module 1 will deepen your understanding of pain and how it intersects with meaningful occupation and participation. You will learn about the mechanisms of pain, the psychological models that explain how we respond to pain and the factors that shape a person’s pain experience such as trauma history, cultural background and environmental contexts.
The Practice Essentials program is specifically crafted to lay the groundwork for occupational therapists embarking on their careers in this area, or for experienced OTs seeking to upskill, transition into this dynamic practice area or are returning to practice after a break.
This module will guide you through applying occupational-therapy models to support a strengths-based approach and incorporate culturally safe, trauma informed practice. It will enhance your knowledge of some of the common pain presentations you may encounter in practice and their functional implications.
Aligned to the OTA Capability Framework for Occupational Therapists Working with People with Pain, this learning experience will prepare you to deliver services that are evidence-based, ethical, and culturally sensitive across various practice environments.

-
