Delivering Stronger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Outcomes

Delivering Stronger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Outcomes

This course supports OTs to progress from cultural awareness to cultural competence by building practical skills to engage respectfully, challenge culturally unsafe practices, and apply culturally responsive decision-making.

Program Overview

Delivering Stronger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Outcomes is an applied learning experience developed by the Centre for Cultural Competence Australia (CCCA) to support participants in progressing from cultural awareness to cultural competence. The course focuses on practical strategies, behaviours, and tools that enable learners to apply cultural knowledge respectfully and effectively in everyday professional practice.

Guided by the Commonwealth Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Capability Framework, this session is focused on DOING, building the capability to engage meaningfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities while strengthening culturally responsive decision-making across workplaces, services, and systems.

Participants explore how racism, unconscious bias, and exclusion can influence policy, service delivery, and workplace culture. Through reflection and practical application, learners develop strategies to identify and challenge culturally unsafe practices, support inclusive communication, and promote shared decision-making. The course emphasises the role every individual plays in shaping culturally capable teams and environments — regardless of profession, role, or sector.

While this course is the second stage in CCCA’s three-part cultural capability learning pathway, it can also be undertaken as a standalone program by those who have completed an equivalent cultural awareness course. You will leave equipped to take meaningful, accountable action and prepared to progress to the final stage of the pathway, Embedding Cultural Safety: Trauma-Informed Leadership and Practice. For more information on this final stage (Part 3) or Part 1 – click here
