Stronger Together: United on the road ahead during disability reform

Published: Tuesday 31 March 2026

Over recent months, OTA has taken a considered and measured approach to our advocacy. In some areas, this has meant working quietly and prioritising stakeholder engagement, policy influence and behind-the-scenes discussions while key reforms have been developed.

That approach has been deliberate. At certain points in reform processes, targeted advocacy behind the scenes is the most effective way to protect outcomes for members and the people you support.

However, we are now moving into a different phase.

Good advocacy requires shifting strategically between targeted engagement and more visible, public advocacy, depending on the policy and political environment at the time. As major reforms progress, that environment is changing.

We are anticipating the Annual Pricing Review to land earlier this year – in the coming weeks. We are concerned about the potential impacts of the proposed NDIS Framework Planning Rules. The Thriving Kids initiative will commence from 1 October, but there remain significant unanswered questions and areas of concern. These are just three examples, but there is much more reform occurring and expected.

Some of OTA’s work will continue to focus on stakeholder engagement, and our approach will remain collaborative. At the same time, members may start to see a shift to increased public facing advocacy over the coming months. This will include:

  • a stronger external presence across media and social channels
  • clearer, more assertive messaging about the value and impact of occupational therapy
  • a greater focus on shaping public and political understanding

We want members to understand this shift and to be ready for it. As our advocacy activity increases, there will be opportunities for members to engage, amplify key messages, or support coordinated advocacy efforts.

We’ll be ensuring that our advocacy clearly articulates both the concerns we have and the solutions we are seeking. It will also consistently highlight the strengths of the occupational therapy profession.

Our aim is to unite around reforms that support a strong and sustainable occupational therapy workforce and ensure that people with disability can access the supports they need to live full, meaningful and empowered lives.

As a result, while OTA may be publicly critical at times, where this makes strategic sense, our communications will also consistently focus on:

  • the value, role and scope of occupational therapy
  • the importance of access to appropriate, evidence-based occupational therapy for people with disability

Increased awareness of the value of occupational therapy is the bedrock upon which we can build a strong movement, together.

People with disability have the right to access occupational therapy that meets their needs. As reforms progress, OTA will continue to advocate to ensure that right is clearly understood, respected and upheld.

This is a marathon, not a sprint. Amidst a challenging reform environment, we call on OTA Members and our broader community to remain united and ready to advocate as one.

  • Raise awareness of occupational therapy within your local communities
