PAIN SCIENCE AND PAIN MANAGEMENT OVER THE LIFESPAN : CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PAIN MANAGEMENT 

This course will provide an understanding on pain management in the context of child and adolescent development. 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is suitable for new graduates, early career therapists and experienced therapists.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the workshop participants will:

  • Understand pain in the context of child and adolescent development
  • Understand developmental aspects of the anatomy and physiology of pain
  • Understand the impact of development on the experience and expression of pain
  • Develop skills in pain assessment in different ages and clinical populations
  • Attachment and pain
  • Develop pain management treatment approaches
  • Pain in different clinical populations: chronic pain, central nervous system disorders, autism spectrum disorder, functional neurological disorder, somatising and conversion disorder
  • Family centred practice and school-based therapies
  • Transition to adult pain services
  • To integrate learning through case studies and small group discussion

PRESENTER

 Dr Cate Sinclair
 

Dr. Cate Sinclair is an occupational therapist with over 25 years of experience who has a private practice with a focus on pain management and sensory modulation. She previously worked as the senior occupational therapist at the Children’s Pain Management Clinic at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. Cate has clinical pain management experience across the lifespan with children, adolescents and adults experiencing persistent pain. Cate completed a Doctor of Philosophy with the University of Queensland in 2018, investigating the relationships between sensory modulation, attachment and functional capacity for children and adolescents with persistent pain. She has presented her work at national and international conferences, and publication. Cate completed a Master’s in Art Therapy in 2001, and Bachelor of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy in 1986.
