SESSION OVERVIEW

Practice Spotlight: Therapeutic goal setting: How to explore hope and aspirations while creating SMART goals

Disability, injury, or illness can significantly reduce an individual’s participation in key life roles and meaningful activities, which can lead to pessimism, a decreased motivation to engage in therapy and reduced goal attainment.

This workshop equips participants with the skills and knowledge needed to support individuals set aspirational goals that inspire hope, while also breaking them down into SMART goals required by organisations or funding bodies.

We will explore an effective goal-setting framework, focusing on how to identify outcomes that are personal, meaningful, and aligned with each individual’s unique aspirations.

Participants will learn practical strategies to guide individuals toward their desired outcomes by translating their aspirations into measurable and achievable therapeutic goals.

This client-driven approach to goal setting not only strengthens therapeutic relationships but also enhances the likelihood of goal attainment, fostering positive and lasting change.

By attending this session you will:

  • Discover the power of helping clients start with big, aspirational goals before breaking them down into actionable, short-term therapeutic goals

  • Gain a clear, practical framework for guiding meaningful conversations and exploring inspiring goals with clients

  • Learn how to create SMART goals from aspirational goals.

  • Be introduced to the Goal Attainment Scale (GAS), learning how to co-create individualised, measurable goals that track meaningful progress.

  • Leave feeling energised and equipped to build stronger therapeutic relationships, thinking beyond organisational and funding limitations when setting goals.

This session is suitable for:
