Understanding Child Development 0-5 years

This one-day interactive workshop for OTs focuses on exploring the importance of understanding a child’s development and relatioship to occupation. Key developmental stages from 0-5 years, including physical, cognitive, and emotional growth will be explored.

Program Overview

It is essential that occupational therapist working with children have a sound understanding of child development across all domains including physical, cognitive, social and emotional.

This workshop will provide you with a deeper understanding of child development and its crucial relationship to occupational therapy.

This workshop will cover child development from birth to age five, focusing on essential domains including motor skills (both large and fine movements), visual perceptual abilities, and cognitive development. Additionally, the workshop will address social development, play, self-care, and independence, along with emotional regulation and attention.

There will be a strong focus on understanding attachment, temperament, and the formation of a child’s sense of self. Mary Sheridan’s influential work will be the primary reference throughout the day.

The relationship between a child’s development and their engagement in various occupations will be emphasised. Through discussions and practical examples, participants will gain insight into how occupational therapists can apply this knowledge to support a child’s occupational performance, independence and participation.

By attending this workshop, you will:

  • Understand how child development informs occupational therapy practice
  • Identify the key principles and factors that influence child development
  • Gain knowledge of the developmental stages from 0-5 years, including the progression of primitive reflexes, posture, large movements, fine motor skills, visual perception, cognition, social behaviour, play, and self-care
