Overview

The Evaluation of Social Interaction (ESI) is used to measure a client’s quality of social interaction. The ESI can be administered to any client, regardless of diagnosis or age, as long as the client is at least the developmental age of 2½ years. A nearly unlimited range of social interactions can be observed. The ESI has been standardised on an international sample of over 6,500 people between the ages of 2 to 100+ years.

In addition to teaching you how to administer the tool reliably, this course  will provide you with the practical skills needed to use the assessment results to plan intervention, set goals, document, and plan for re-evaluation — all while remaining occupation-centered.

The occupational therapist administers the ESI by observing a client engaging in two real social interactions with typical social partners. The occupational therapist then scores the quality of 27 social interaction skills that the client naturally performed during the social interactions. The occupational therapist uses the software to generate an ESI Results Report which includes the client’s ESI measure. The ESI measure represents the degree to which a client’s social interactions are polite, respectful, well-timed, and mature.

The occupational therapist can use a client’s ESI measure to plan occupation-based and occupation-focused intervention, develop occupation-focused goals, and write occupation-focused documentation. The ESI measure can also be used as an outcome measure — providing evidence that a client’s quality of social interaction has changed.

The cost of this course includes The Center for Innovative OT Solutions (CIOTS) ESI Course participant 3 yr soft ware licences ; calibration fee for course participants and the Social Interaction Manual.

Uniquely, an Occupational Therapy Assessment, the ESI

  • Focuses on what the person wants and needs to do
  • Observation is during occupational performance
  • Interaction is within the real context of occupation
  • Observation is of the person and his/her typical social partners

Presenter

Robyn Low

Robyn draws on over thirty-five years of experience working as an Occupational Therapist in Victoria. As part of her practice in supporting other occupational therapists, she is keen to work with them in grounding their practice in meaningful occupation both for their client group and also to add to their professional identity as occupational therapists. This has led her to be involved in sharing occupation-based intervention models such as Occupational Therapy Intervention Process Model and assessment tools such as Assessment of Motor and Process Skills, the School Assessment of Motor and Process Skills and the Evaluation of Social Interaction.
