OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IN PRESSURE INJURY ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT

Spread over three (3) sessions, participants will learn about national and international guidelines in assessing risk and grading pressure injuries.
Occupational Therapists can use guidelines and tools to assess and inform clients about pressure injury prevention and management.
The role of OT within a multidisciplinary team will be reviewed to provide a holistic approach to this area of practice.   

Management strategies incorporating anatomical and functional assessment, will be applied to prescription of assistive technology.

Suitable for New Grad and Beginner OTs only

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • To understand principles of OT assessment and intervention in pressure injury prevention and management.
  • To gain an awareness of national and international guidelines and how to apply in practice
  • To understand the OT role within a multidisciplinary team in pressure injury prevention and management.

Session 1: Understanding Pressure Injuries

  • Introduction to guidelines
  • Understand what a pressure injury is and describe wound staging
  • Introduction of International Classification of Functioning (ICF)
  • Understand the role of the multidisciplinary team in pressure injury management
  • Understand risks for pressure injuries and some common risk assessments seen in clinical environments

Session 2: Pressure Injury Assessment

  • Understand the role of the Occupational Therapist in pressure injury assessment and management
  • Introduction to Occupational Therapy assessments
  • Identification of contributing factors and potential causes of pressure injuries
  • Locate bony prominences and understand their relationship to pressure injury
  • Review of cushion function
  • Review of mattress function

Session 3: Pressure Injury Management Strategies

  • Occupational Therapy interventions for client and family education
  • Review a range of supine and seated support surfaces
  • Pressure relief vs positioning
  • Context of Occupational Therapy practice
  • Funding considerations

Through many years’ experience both in Australia and overseas, Michelle and Christa have developed a clear clinical reasoning perspective in working with people with physical disability. The practical application of knowledge and experience in a wide variety of roles and settings is the key to their practice in direct patient / client work; training & education; mentoring & supervision; advocacy and funding assistance. They currently participate in undergraduate education and working for a government funding body, respectively.
