SESSION OVERVIEW

Working in Australian schools: A 3-part Workshop Series for Early Career Occupational Therapists  

This 3-part workshop series is designed specifically for early career occupational therapists working in Australian school environments. This series aims to equip OTs with essential knowledge and practical skills crucial for effective intervention and support in educational settings.  Attendance at this session will increase your understanding of the role of OT in school settings including mainstream government schools, specialist schools and private schools.  

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Suitable for early career occupational therapists or those new to working in the education sector. This workshop series is suitable for those employed by a school, education department as well as community based paediatric therapists.  

Please note: This workshop series is not focused on OTs with extensive experience in working in school settings, although all levels of experience are welcomed. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Workshop 1 & 2 will: 

  • Focus on foundational knowledge about legislation, education systems and models of intervention 
  • Explore different models of practice for OTs in school: transdisciplinary, consultative & tiered model of support including use of case examples to enhance understanding of models 
  • Provide insights into developments in inclusive education  
  • Explore conducting assessments within the school environment 
  • Discuss strategies for working with teachers to support students within their classroom 

Workshop 3 will:  

  • Explore formal and informal assessment methods for use in schools  
  • Support the use of clinical reasoning in the school setting 
  • Discuss a range of resources and tools for use in school-based settings 
  • Share practical tips for working in school environments 
  • Use case studies to support learning 
  • Provide opportunity for discussion and sharing of case examples

PRESENTERS

  Megan King

Meg King is an Occupational Therapist with over 18 years’ experience in public health, clinical mental health services and across Victoria. Meg transitioned into the Education setting and has worked as an Occupational Therapist in schools for a number of years, including within the Mental Health Practitioner initiative established by the Department of Education Victoria. She also works as a visiting lecturer at La Trobe University.  

  Megan West

Megan West is an occupational therapist who has worked in paediatrics for more than 8 years. Megan has worked within the QLD, VIC and NSW school systems. In her work within the education sector, Megan has had a variety of roles including working individually with students, running group programs, providing teacher coaching and running presentations and workshops for teachers and leadership staff. Megan is passionate about developing the role of OT’s in the education system. Megan is currently employed in a private practice in Queensland.

Live attendance at all 3 workshops is strongly encouraged to optimise learning. If for any reason you are unable to attend all 3 workshops, the first 2 workshops will be recorded and made available for registrant use only. The third workshop will NOT be recorded as it is interactive and discussion based.
