RECORDED WEBINAR SUMMARY

'IS YOUR CLIENT SUITABLE FOR SDA HOUSING?' HELPING PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY TO CHOOSE WHERE AND WITH WHOM THEY WANT TO LIVE

Suitable housing and support are a fundamental human right and essential for dignity, and quality of life. With the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), younger people with complex disability in Australia may be eligible for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) funding to enable them to move into independent housing of their choice. With a developing housing market, occupational therapists have a central role in supporting and empowering people with disability and their families to make informed housing choices.

This workshop is designed to raise awareness of the rights of young people with disability to choose where and with whom they want to live and how they are supported. The workshop aims to inform, educate and equip occupational therapists with the knowledge and skills to enable young people with disability to successfully transition to living arrangements in line with their needs and preferences. The workshop is informed by the lived experience perspective of people with disability, drawing upon a human-rights framework and strengths-based approach to support successful transitions to more independent living.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of workshop, participants will :

  •  Understand barriers to moving into individualized housing and strategies to address these barriers
  •  Informed of personalised housing and support solutions
  •  Understand how to navigate NDIS, SDA housing and support options and opportunities
