SUPPORTING AUTISTIC CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES: SHORT COURSE
SESSION OVERVIEW
OTA are pleased to partner with Autism CRC to provide this short course that explores the National Guideline for supporting the learning, participation, and wellbeing of autistic children and their families in Australia. This Guideline was commissioned by Autism CRC and has been through a rigorous development process with the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) in December 2023 approving all 84 recommendations of the Guideline.
Consistent with the NHMRC’s best practice guidance, the Guideline was co-developed by practitioners, autistic people, family members, researchers, and the broader support community.
The Guideline defines evidence-based practices for supporting autistic children and their families that promote a child’s development, their participation in childhood activities, and their wellbeing. It is primarily focused on the delivery of non-pharmacological supports to children aged 0-12 years in community and clinical settings, and doing so in ways that are safe, effective, and desirable to children and their families.
Course Details & Structure
This online self-paced short course explores the Recommendations included within the Guideline. The modules and subsequent lessons within the course have been developed to allow effective implementation of the Guideline within practice when selecting, planning, delivering and monitoring supports. Lessons highlight the importance of working in a partnership and coordinating supports for the learning, participation and wellbeing of autistic children and their families.
Content is presented within innovative eLearning software, which allows for self-directed and flexible learning options.
A core element of the course is the integration of three in-depth Guideline in Practice case studies which all link back to the Guideline Recommendations and important community insights.
Essential downloadable resources are provided, such as a Guideline summary for practitioners, a Plausible, Practical, Desirable, and Defensible framework template, and a Guiding Principles poster to support practitioners with Guideline implementation.
Additionally, participants can build skills by completing reflection questions throughout and at the end of each case study. The course also includes filmed case study conversations with parents and practitioners that explore further what the Guiding Principles really mean for a child and family, from a professional and personal perspective.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Registrants are provided with opportunities to:
- Identify Guideline Recommendations that are relevant to clinical decision-making within the case studies
- Contrast and make use of information coming from different points of view including those of autistic people, family members, and practitioners
- Relate the information in the Guideline and the case study to your situation (e.g., work, life)
- Develop a plan for how you will apply the Guideline to your situation (e.g., work, life).
