MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDATIONS MODULE

MENTAL HEALTH SENSORY MODULATION

All occupational therapists require the ability to use a range of different assessment tools and to use these as a foundation for the development of appropriate clinical formulation, diagnoses and planning of supports and therapeutic interventions.

While different mental health settings will emphasise particular types of assessment and interventions, all occupational therapists specialising in mental health should seek to build appropriate assessment and planning capability through on-the-job clinical practice, as well as through specialised training.

This self-directed eLearning and development module will assist occupational therapists working in mental health settings to build the appropriate knowledge and skills in sensory assessment and intervention.

This module is build on the OTA Mental Health Capability Framework and supports the pathway for occupational therapists seeking OTA mental health endorsement.

Developed by OTs for OTs, this module provides an introduction to sensory assessment and intervention.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

After completing this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the role of sensory profiles within occupational therapy practice and how to apply them effectively.
  • Acquire sensory modulation skills in the completion of comprehensive sensory profiles and implementation of personalised sensory diets.
  • Develop more diverse knowledge of various sensory modulation interventions and their therapeutic applications.
  • Apply sensory modulation methods to support clients in managing their emotions, tolerating distress, and enhancing their overall functioning.
  • Construct basic weighted modality plans, using insights gained from sensory evaluations.
