Oedema: How to identify, assess & manage

This workshop is for you!
Oedema is a common symptom experienced by a range of people. Understanding why it develops and how treatments can improve or exacerbate oedema is the key to successful management. Attending this workshop will provide you with a thorough understand of the mechanisms of oedema development, you will learn to assess oedema and whether a person is safe for treatment, and you will understand how to select the most suitable management approach for a range of different patient groups. The oedema management strategies we focus on will including compression bandaging, garments and wraps to enable you to tailor your intervention to the needs of your patient group and the resources you have available in your workplace. You will have the opportunity to practice with a wide range of compression products to develop practical skills you can

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Suitable for OTs at any career stage, who are new to working with oedema or looking to refresh their knowledge.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, participants will:
- Be able to identify the signs and symptoms of oedema
- Be able to identify the underlying causes of oedema
- Recognise different types of oedema
- Understand the factors required for oedema assessment
- Determine appropriate treatment techniques
- Be able to apply simple compression bandaging for upper and lower limb oedema management
- Be able problem solve appropriate garment prescription
- Be aware of advanced oedema treatment techniques
PRESENTER
Dr Amanda Pigott
Dr Amanda Pigott is an occupational therapist with extensive experience in oedema and lymphoedema management. Amanda has worked with a wide range of conditions requiring oedema management. Amanda has obtained her PhD, has worked in the cancer-related lymphoedema service at the Princess Alexandra Hospital for 10 years and now works as a research fellow at the University of Queensland investigating the causes and effects of oedema.
