Lived Experiences & Support Needs of CALD OT Students in Simulation Learning

Published: Sunday 1 September 2024

Survey Title: Exploring the lived experiences, preparation, and support needs of occupational therapy students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in high-fidelity simulation-based learning

University Affiliation: The University of Queensland

Principle Researcher: Luocheng Zhang (PhD Candidate)

Supervisor(s): Dr Roma Forbes, Dr Adriana Penman, Dr Freyr Patterson

Purpose of study: This research is about understanding the lived experiences and support needs of occupational therapy students from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds participating in high-fidelity simulation-based learning activities. High-fidelity simulation is a teaching method that uses simulated patients to help students practice their skills in a safe environment before working with real patients. The insights gained from this research will help improve educational practices and create better support systems for students from diverse backgrounds in simulation.

What is involved: The research team will contact eligible participants to take part in a one-time interview lasting approximately 45-60 minutes. Participants who complete the interview will receive an AUD 50 voucher as compensation for their time.

Participation Criteria: For Occupational Therapy student participants, students need to be from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background and currently enrolled in an entry-level occupational therapy program in Australia. They must have completed simulation with simulated patients within the last six months.

For Occupational Therapy educator participants, educators must have had experience facilitating OT students from CALD backgrounds in high-fidelity simulation-based learning activities.

Summary of the survey: This Qualtrics survey is for recruitment purposes. It includes questions to assess whether participants meet the inclusion criteria and allows them to express interest in participating in an interview. Participants can provide their email address for further contact regarding the interview.
