SESSION OVERVIEW

Do you know what AI is? How can AI be used in OT practice? What are the opportunities and risks for OTs?

As the use of AI (artificial intelligence) becomes more popular and ChatGPT seems to have become a hot topic of conversation everywhere, it is time to explore what this means for OTs.

Whilst AI will not replace occupational therapists, there is the potential for AI to support and enhance the work that OTs do. 

Join us to hear from experienced OTs with an interest in AI discuss its current and potential use in occupational therapy across clinical practice, academia and research. 

This session will explore: 

  • What is AI and how is it being used in healthcare and specifically OT
  • Common AI, with a focus on ChatGPT – how does it work and how do you use it
  • Use of AI in academia and research – examples, risks and opportunities
  • How AI can be used to support OT practice such as report writing, administrative tasks
  • Supporting client goals and outcomes with the use of AI
  • Top tips for using AI and how to get started
  • Key considerations when using AI including risks and pitfalls

This session is suitable for:

All occupational therapists at any career stage.

PRESENTERS

 Emma Ashcroft

Emma Ashcroft is an occupational therapist and educator at Curtin University. Emma has worked in the disability sector and is the current Board Chair of Befriend, a social enterprise supporting community connection for all people. Emma has a strong focus on authentic assessment design accessible for students and educators. She has been an early adopter of generative AI and is collaborating with educators, students, and researchers to improve our understanding and ethical use of this technology in education, healthcare and everyday life.

 Will Crowe

With a significant interest in the intersection between technology and activity participation, Will is an OT whose dominant area of practice involves the prescription of assistive and inclusive technological equipment to assist his client’s attain their goals. His area of professional passion lies in facilitating accessible video game engagement with clients living with a range of physical and cognitive disabilities. Will has worked largely in private practice and for not-for-profit organisations and also lectures part time at Flinders University.

 Jess Francis

Jess is the Director of The Training Club, providing occupational therapy services on Sydney's North Shore. Jess has a background in executive leadership, post-graduate research, tertiary education and advocacy. Jess has completed post-graduate research exploring the use of virtual reality and spent the last two years running a digital health start up in the healthcare software industry.

 Dr Anne Honey

Dr Anne Honey is the Education Integrity Coordinator for the Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney.  She is an occupational therapist with a background in mental health and disability. Her education integrity role involves examining increasing numbers of cases of inappropriate use of artificial intelligence as well as promoting understanding of the issues amongst staff and students.
