Introduction to Hand Therapy and Splinting Technique (Basic Level)

This course will cover common hand diagnosis presented to OT’s and give you the skills to assess the patient, design a treatment plan and know when to refer on. It will also cover basic splint patterns and give you a further appreciation of factors to consider when designing and splinting patients.

This course is designed for the therapist who is either interested in exploring a new hand therapy role, or for someone who is exposed to the occasional “hand” patient and wants to gain more expertise. It is also designed for the university student who wants to bridge the gap between university and work.

At the completion of this course, therapists will;

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of upper limb anatomy

  • Complete an initial assessment with a patient

  • Apply clinical reasoning to plan a treatment approach

  • Identify the purpose of splinting and know which materials to use and what “off the shelf” splints are available
