INTRODUCTION TO MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING FOR OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PRACTICE (IMI1410)

WORKSHOP SUMMARY

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a ‘collaborative conversation style for strengthening a person’s own motivation and commitment to change’ (Miller 2013)[1] . MI provides workers with strategies and skills to support their clients to make meaningful changes. It also offers ways to deal with common issues in practice such as client ambivalence, relapsing conditions, lack of importance, confidence and readiness to change, and discord between client and therapist.

MI has a strong evidence base with over 200 randomized controlled trials demonstrating its effectiveness in a wide range of areas including mental health, substance use disorders, physical health addressing exercise, diet, pain management, diabetes, oral health, and within education, employment and correctional services.

This practical workshop introduces participants to the core elements of MI - theory and practice - and provides opportunities to practice skills which can then be applied across a range of service delivery settings.
