Doing Our Best: Individual and Community Responses to Challenging Times

Occupational Therapy Australia are pleased to announce the development of a new book which will be available in both eBook and hard copy formats. Titled “Doing Our Best: Individual and Community Responses to Challenging Times”, the book will be a curated collection of diverse stories from members and people in their networks about the things that people did during times of drought, bushfires, floods and COVID. It is not a book about resilience, but rather a book which captures – in people’s own words – the things that people did and the strategies they used to respond to these difficult situations.

Broadly, it’s about Doing:

  • Doing - what I did myself, for example, started making home baked bread during COVID
  • Doing With - what I did with others, for example, participated in a community choir during the drought
  • Doing For -what I did for others, for example, helped repair a shed damaged in a bushfire or volunteered to do deliver food parcels after floods

It is expected that we will curate about 40 stories which best reflect diverse stories in the areas and contexts above for the final book. The book will uniquely capture the narratives of Australians as they actively responded by themselves or with friends, families, and communities to the difficult times we have all collectively been through. It is planned to be launched at Easter 2022.

We are happy to answer any questions and look forward to receiving lots of stories from as diverse a representation as possible such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people living with disability, those who identify as LGBTIQ and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
